The rules of tyres

When driving, the only contact you have with the road is through the tyres on your truck. Statistics show that almost half of all vehicle accidents are due to the vehicle skidding on the road.

Laws

  • The law requires that tyres should have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm
  • These levels represent the absolute minimum and any tyres that are worn as much as this should be replaced immediately.
  • To help to judge the tread that you have on your current tyres, manufacturers often mould tread bars at roughly 1.6mm. If you are able to see these bars, your tyres are about to become illegal.

Tread

  • The main purpose of the tread on tyres is to allow the tyre to grip the road in wet conditions. Water on the road surface has to be squeezed out by the tread grooves.
  • If the water is not dispersed by the tyres, the tyre will begin to 'aquaplane' - a sheet of water builds up between the tyre and the road - and the tyre loses contact with the road.
  • This is why for safety reasons, its important to always monitor your tyre tread.

What affects yours tyres?

  • There are many things that can effect your tyres including tyre pressures, these can be checked by looking in your vehicle handbook to make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure.
  • They should be checked at least once every two weeks, and always when they are cold.
  • If you are planning on going on a long trip or pulling a heavy load, again check the handbook and increase the tyre pressure accordingly. But remove this extra pressure once removing the heavy load.
